A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's major government projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term ended the year before. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated speed, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party urged an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in full adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
